Legacy Giving

The Talmud states: “just as my ancestors planted for me, so too, will I plant for those who come after me.”

With this idea in mind, and knowing that one of the greatest gifts that someone can give is that of a legacy, Congregation Beth Sholom invites you to consider including a planned gift in your estate.  This form of contribution can have a lasting impact and serve as a pillar for our beloved congregation’s future.

There are many ways to perpetuate your Jewish legacy and help fund the future of progressive Judaism in Alaska.

Gifts through Wills and Trusts

Naming Congregation Beth Sholom as a beneficiary for a set amount or percentage of one’s estate in either a will or a trust is the most commonly used method and it is simple to do.  You can designate a specific dollar amount or a portion of your residuary of your estate.  If you already have a will you can easily amend it to include CBS.

Gifts Made by Beneficiary Designations

These are easy to set up as well.  You would just need to contact your plan administrator or insurance agent to obtain a beneficiary designation form.  You can then designate CBS to receive all or a portion of these assets.

Gifts of Life Insurance

This is a powerful way to make a meaningful gift to CBS.  If you own a life insurance policy that is no longer needed, simply designate Congregation Beth Sholom as the beneficiary.  Or, you can buy a policy that names CBS.  Your life insurance agent can provide you with the proper form to complete.

Gifts through Retirement Accounts

CBS, as a non-profit corporation, does not pay taxes so the entire amount of your gift would be tax-free.  You have the option to give all or a portion of your 401(K), IRA, or other qualified pension plan through a beneficiary designation.  All you need to do is contact your plan administrator and let them know that you want to name CBS as the beneficiary.

Transfer on Death (TOD) or Payable on Death (POD)

With these you have the option to designate all or a portion of specific assets to be transferred to CBS upon your death.  The POD is used for bank assets; a TOD is used for securities; and a Beneficiary Deed is used for real estate.  Your attorney can help guide you through this process.

Sample Bequest language:

Please amend my/our estate plan(s) to include at my death/the death of the survivor of the two of us, the following gift:

I give $ _____to Congregation Beth Sholom, Anchorage, AK, or its lawful successor, to be used for its general charitable purposes.

And/or

I give (name of asset) to Congregation Beth Sholom, Anchorage, AK, or its lawful successor, to be used for its general charitable purposes.

Sample Residuary Gift language:

I give ­_______% of my estate’s residuary to Congregation Beth Sholom, Anchorage, AK, or its lawful successor, to be used for its general charitable purposes.
